In 2011 Spencer, the owner of Hatchet Eyewear, was playing a pick up game of basketball. While playing a ball bounced off the rim and flew directly into his face. The impact of the ball hitting his face broke his glasses into two pieces. As Spencer bent down to gather the broken pieces of his glasses he made a decision. The decision he made was to make his very own glasses, so he did just that. He bought a two by four and a box cutter and carved the first pair of Hatchets completely by hand. After showing them to some friends he decided to make a sunglasses company. He initially made all of the sunglasses by hand, by himself, in a workshop in his attic. The prototypes were endless, making a tweek here, or a tweek there. Soon Spencer became displeased with his work working skills and took a part time job in a wood shop to help him to hone his skill.
One day while working in the wood shop Spencer was running a board through the table saw. As he ran the board he caught his left hand in the saw. The saw cut his left index finger completely off, save some skin which kept his finger connected. Spencer was rushed to the emergency room. The verdict was that the saw had cut through the tendon, through the bone, and caused major nerve damage that could only be corrected through surgery which would reattach the tendon and place a pin to hold his finger in place for four months.
After the surgery Spencer was put in a cast for the next four months, there was no way to make the sunglasses by himself anymore. He knew if he did not act quick that he would lose the opportunity to continue to produce beautiful hand crafted wooden sunglasses. He made the decision to outsource to a work shop. Spencer hopes again to make a line of Hatchet Eyewear with his own hands again, but for now he is just happy Hatchet Eyewear survived
